Laser Dentistry Although lasers have been around for some time in the field of dentistry, it is just recently that they have advanced to the point of impacting everyday dental practice. The Midwest Center for Laser Dentistry PLLC has incorporated four lasers into daily practice. The four lasers are the Waterlase, Twilite, Diagnodent, and Periolase II. Each laser has a distinctive wavelngth and purpose. The Waterlase is a Er,Cr,YSGG hard and soft tissue laser used mainly in the removal of decay and the shaping of teeth and bone. The Twilite Diode Laser is used in soft tissue recountouring for esthetics and whitening of teeth. The Diagnodent Laser is used in the early detection of decay. Early detection along with laser preparation allows for more conservative and less costly treatment. The Periolase II is a nd:YAG laser used in the treatment of gum disease. Dr. Schalter has Standard Proficiency Certificates from the Academy of Laser Dentistry and the World Clinical Laser Institute. He has participated in 30 hours of continuing education in laser dentistry in the last year alone. He is founder of the Laser Dentistry Forum .com an online message board that has laser dentist participation from all over the world. Over the next three years he will continue the process of obtaining his Advanced Proficiency in Lasers.
